Lucia (b.1996, Brighton) is a multi-disciplinary artist who works across film, performance and installation. Her work uses humour to observe, re-enact and challenge interwoven structures of British culture and behaviour. Her practice often explores leisure, pleasure-seeking, and entertainment culture as crucial sites to understand who we are and why we do what we do. Tragicomedy and surrealism are used to explore ‘social truths’ and she values the power of 'cringe' to dredge up uncomfortable revelations or feelings.
Recent works investigate themes of community, identity, capitalism, tourism, existentialism and escapism, frequently using the "road movie" genre and the metaphor of the journey to unpack these ideas. Following her documentary-led film, The Last Tender, (2022) which chronicled the experience of being on a month-long cruise holiday/residency at the start of the pandemic, she became deeply interested in the relationship between disaster, entertainment, and hedonism. Whilst at Open School East (23/24), she created Roman Road, a video installation that used the hyper-real realm of tourism to explore concepts of self and other, subverting the role of tour guide to examine self-discovery and alienation.
